Field record / incomplete

The Quiet Ones

A feeling rung out across the world.

Begin here

A year before the larger dark

The premise

This is the record of a small community living through its last quiet year before the wider Stellar Dawn campaign knows what to call the thing beneath it.

The promise

We are not here to solve the mystery quickly. We are here to notice what people protect, what they neglect, what they grieve, and what they become accustomed to.

Community questions

Answer before the first card

01

What does this community have too little of, even in good weather?

02

What local tradition keeps people together, even when they resent it?

03

What place nearby is treated with politeness rather than fear?

04

Whose absence is ordinary enough that no one asks about it anymore?

Community board

The year at a glance

Scarcities

  • Clean water that tastes like water.
  • Adults willing to sleep alone.
  • Maps everyone agrees are current.

Active projects

  • Raise lantern posts along the low road.
  • Inventory the sealed schoolhouse cabinets.
  • Find a second well before summer heat.

Unanswered

  • Why do old routes remember different destinations?
  • Who keeps replacing the board over the well?
  • What counts the children when no one is inside?

Carry forward

  • The door in the south field.
  • The local rule against whistling after rain.
  • The phrase: "leave before the quiet notices."

Records

Small survivals

01

Schoolhouse ledger

Nine names repeated every Monday. By spring, the handwriting continues but the names are gone.

02

Well rope

Found cut cleanly and tied again with shaking hands. The bucket was never recovered.

03

Door in the field

No house. No frame. It opens only with effort, and always onto the same wet dark.

04

Lantern glass

Every pane along the low road cracked inward on the same night. No wind was recorded.

05

Boundary stone

Moved three times by committee. Each morning it returned with fresh mud on the wrong side.

06

Prayer bell

Rings once before storms and twice before visitors. It has not been wrong yet.

The map

First landmarks

Known places

  • The old well, sealed with a board that does not rot.
  • The schoolhouse, still stocked for children no one remembers teaching.
  • The south field, where a door stands without a wall.
  • The low road, flooded long after the rain has stopped.

Unsettled edges

  • A tree line that appears closer in morning fog.
  • A boundary stone moved three times and found warm each time.
  • A house foundation with no matching memory.
  • A ditch where voices carry farther than they should.

Session log

What the year remembers

Spring

Establish the community, draw what matters, name the first scarcities, and let the ordinary world breathe.

Summer

Let projects grow. Let confidence become a little careless. Let the map begin to contradict itself.

Autumn

Make the costs visible. Record who changes their mind, who refuses, and what cannot be stored for winter.

Winter

Do not explain everything. Preserve the residue that the Stellar Dawn Nexus will later inherit.

Last note

When the rain stops, leave before the quiet notices.
